In 2000, OSF-SA provided a grant to the BJA, which with the South African government, supported the establishment of the very first Thuthuzela Care Centre, located in Manenberg Cape Town.
The Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) are a world first, providing a specialised single centre that provide support to survivors of gender-based violence in South Africa, including for post-sexual violence medical, psycho-social care and legal support. OSF-SA partnered with the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to roll out the TCCs throughout South Africa that have been introduced as a critical part of South Africa’s anti-rape strategy, aiming to reduce secondary victimisation and to build a case ready for successful prosecution. Fifty-one centres have been established since 2006. The Thuthuzela programme is now led by the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs (SOCA) unit of the National Prosecuting Authority.
